We all know that coffee isn't conducive to a good night's sleep, but we weren't expecting an ad for the drink to provide such nightmare-fuel.
Utilising the comedic oddness of agency Erich & Kallman, DTC roasting company goodboybob's Lab Rats sees a pair of scientists turn to their horrifying test subjects to confirm the brilliance of the beverage.
Produced through Tool, the spot is directed by commercial director Erich Joiner, himself the founder of the brand; proving that caffeine and creativity are a filmmaker's best friends.
“I was watching the movie Elf,” explains Eric Kallman, Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Erich and Kallman, “ and there’s a funny scene where Buddy enters a random diner to congratulate them for the 'world’s best coffee' sign they have in the window. We started joking about how one would actually go about proving such a thing, and that eventually led to our lab rats script.”
“I’m surprised and thrilled at how fast goodboybob has taken off,” adds Joiner. “To keep the momentum going, its first visual spots had to be original, entertaining and express what I’m being told by our customers – that it’s the best tasting coffee they ever had.
