Project Zero, a nonprofit dedicated to marine conservation, has launched a powerful campaign that calls on Iceland to ban whaling in North Atlantic waters before licenses are renewed for 2024.
Welcome to Iceland: The Home of Modern Whaling appears at first to be a tourism spot, but soon moves from imagery of the country's natural wonders to grim footage of the slaughter of endangered fin whales turning the ocean red with blood.
The campaign is the result of a collaboration between CDs Sam Bishop and Michael Eichler, the London-based duo behind Sam + Mike; and Swedish Editor/Videographer Erik HedenFalk.
Scientists have dubbed large whales such as these 'ecosystem engineers' due to their capacity to recycle marine nutrients, which helps to create the oxygen we breathe and plays a critical role in mitigating greenhouse gasses.
Iceland’s whaling fleet hunts and brutally kills fin whales, including pregnant females, so that their meat can be sold to Japan as pet food.
The campaign follows a bill recently submitted to Iceland’s parliament to end commercial whaling. The bill is open to public opinion and will be voted on at a later date. More than half the country's population is opposed to whaling.
