Five Questions from Quarantine: Simon Chaudoir
DOP Simon Chaudoir tells us why he wants a bit of magic, humour and sensuality in his lockdown companions and how he's reacquainting himself with 20th Century social skills.
What's your self-isolation set-up at the moment?
We are very lucky, the renovation of our flat was completed just before Christmas and we are enjoying the amazing views - we are on the top floor of an Edwardian mansion block in West Hampstead but can see across London to the Surrey Hills.
It's lockdown; aside from your family, which four people, past or present, would you most like to be quarantined with?
- Aleister Crowley for spells.
- Anais Nin for sensuality.
- Buster Keaton for amusement.
- Luisa Casati for extravagance.
We need entertainment, what's your favourite short film?
It has to be Foutaises by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

You've completed Netflix. And Amazon Prime. And Disney+. It's on the hard stuff; board games. What do you pick and why?
Good God no, just re-reading old books at the moment.
On a serious note, how do you think this situation will impact you individually, and the industry as a whole?
On a less serious note, I have really enjoyed reacquainting myself with 20th Century social skills - using the phone to call people with instead of sending text messages.
Regarding the present situation, wouldn’t it be wonderful if the virus killed off all the anthem and manifesto adverts and only stories and ideas survived?
