One Track Mind: Karl Westman
Karl Westman Director of Music at Ogilvy New York, celebrates the occasional sound of silence and can't keep off the dance floor to a 70s disco classic as he reveals some of his Elements Music Isolation Radio Station playlist.
What's the song you've listened to most during this isolation period?
When I was a kid, I had a music teacher who told me silence is the canvas on which we make music. I'll admit it, except for my listening for work, I've found the absence of music therapeutic. Sometimes you need a break, even from the things you love.
What track always gets you on the dance floor?
September by Earth Wind and Fire. I defy anyone to stay put to this track. Sure, it's become a wedding dance floor cliche, but just listen to that band's pocket. The horn arrangement is elevating.
What's your 'guilty pleasure' track?
Make it with You by Bread. Just kidding. "Your Honor, I plead not guilty."
What song always makes you turn off the stereo when it comes on?
Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley. There's was just no accounting for some of the pop music in the '80s. Maybe it was the video that put me over the edge.
We can't go out right now, but when we're finally allowed to head out for a night on the town, what track will you listen to while you're getting ready?
Yellow Moon by the Neville Brothers. There's a mysterious slinkiness to this track. The singer asks the yellow moon what it sees while looking down at planet Earth.
