Two people sit across from each other, staring their competition down. And then the drumming starts.
The two drummers battle it out, but there are no instruments here. In Creativity Beats Division, there just a challenge, just the imagination of a beat. It feels like something is missing, but it also feels real, intentional. There are no tricks here, it’s two people on the air drums as the beat rips out, and it feels intense.
There’s this one moment that sold me. We close in on a shoe, and it stops. We get this one second of the shoe being in a fixed place, an invisible solid underneath. It’s clear, effective, and simple, and it works. I know what’s happening. I know immediately who this person is. The piece merges exceptionally effective visuals with a clear tie in to the low-to-no-impact philosophy of Elliott’s mission. With restraint and vision, director Jeppe Kolstrup certainly shows how strong execution can surpass fancy filming.
