Django Django gets us in a spin

The Victorian phénakisticope/Fantascope is early animation distilled down to its most elemental - a spinning disk filled with images that, when viewed through slits or filmed at the right frame rate, gives the illusion of motion.

The magic of the technique is explored to the max in this hypnotic promo for British art rock band Django Django's Spirals, from Caviar new talent Maxim Kelly.

Creating six beautifully art-directed antascopes by hand, and filmed on a spinning turntable, Kelly's film marries the analogue and digital, mirroring the circling synths of the song with some beguiling visuals.
