London's NERD Productions are honoured to have Karni & Saul from Sulkybunny join their diverse roster.

It is a pleasure getting to know them even better and treating you to a few bits on their style, most recent work and balancing their life as a working couple with kids.

During an unusually hot summer, Karni & Saul have been busy with their BFI mixed media short Wild Summon. Trying to keep two kids happy and busy in a huge paddling pool, working on an eye mama photo book and project about the mother gaze. And of course, eating a ton of watermelon, while quietly panicking about the environment and global warming. A good summer overall!

The duo describes their style as casual fantasy, but where is the inspiration for this coming from? They find it in everyday life. Casual fantasy is not typical, but it appears naturally in live action in the details where it is merged perfectly into life because life and fantasy are interconnected. Every day of anyone’s life can be fantastical, it’s down to your point of view and imagination. Sometimes, life can be stranger than fiction.

In their short films Turning and Flytopia, Karni & Saul say that fantasy is a part of the narrative. Like a boy’s imagination or a man losing his mind, they love the play and the surrealness this brings. It is a visual medium after all, so it has to be visual pleasure and magic.

Music videos are a big part of the portfolio for Karni & Saul. It is something that has a special place in their creative adventures. Music, visuals and fantasy work so well together, like tea and biscuits. They improve and amplify each other when it works well especially when they do love a song and it all resonates. Most of the time Karni & Saul also have images pop into their heads like magic.

Working together definitely has its perks and Karni & Saul say their kids definitely inspire their creativity by being playful and imaginative. Interacting with kids can be magic, but also hard work. They make things they want them to see or be inspired by even if it’s in the future. Being a directing duo and couple with kids is their reality and they’ve never really known any different. It comes with power and also compromises, and again, they wouldn’t have it any different.

On one of the most enjoyable projects of their career, they highlighted one of the first-ever commercials they shot for BBC Digital Radio with Larry and Dave. They played a lot and had loads of fun experimenting with stop-frame animation, had a big laugh and were very creative. It set the standards high, the three short films for BBC, Film4 and BFI were a long and joyful ride. Super hard work but full of creative satisfaction and freedom. Joining NERD Productions was a no-brainer for the duo as they have known and liked NERD’s Executive Producer Milana for a long time. Karni & Saul love to see female leads wherever they can as well as the companies that support artists and creativity.
