Full disclosure: this particular shots editor has never played, seen nor been in the vicinity of Digital Extreme's popular videogame Warframe, so cannot comment on this film's connection, but if the experience has half the emotional heft and visual flair of this enjoyable short, it might be time to grab the gamepad.
Created to promote a new playable character for the game, Styanax, Ascension Day is a fast-paced anime that follows a young woman as she attempts to follow in the footsteps of her missing brother, eventually calling upon the skillset of the aforementioned warrior in a vibrant face-off.
Directed by David Pagaille through Passion Paris, the mini-movie tells its story through some outstanding 2D animation; engaging in the melodrama with impressive set pieces and character design that is in keeping with its authentic anime aesthetic.
