“Everything about me is mixed: my sound, my DNA…” In this superbly cool short film created by Butter Agency and directed by Amara Abbas through New Land, DJ Malika Mahmoud talks about how her ethnic heritage has been the driving force behind the sounds she creates.
Change Makers features tantalisingly brief samples of Malika's banging dance beats between much quieter passages. Footage of Malika and her fellow DJs joyfully dancing, overlaid by a classical soundtrack, is interspersed with domestic scenes lovingly recalled from the DJ’s childhood.
Throughout, Malika shares her thoughts on her experiences as a person of colour in a predominantly white culture and her hopes that through her music she might help to “change the world for the better.”
