Evocative and plainly sad, News Tonight shows how unfortunately common disasters are, in ways we sometimes don’t think about.

Using unsteady cameras, stark lighting, and extreme close-ups to create a feeling of confusion, we tour a house that has been destroyed by a California wildfire. Following an elderly lady as she goes room by room, the voice-over gets louder and louder, layered broadcasts and news reports unrelated to the tragedy on screen.

Directed by Sara Dunlop and produced by The Corner Shop, the emotional intensity of the piece is very persona and intimate. Closed in and surrounded, when we finally get outside of the home, we’re reminded that these tragedies happen every day, in our own backyards.
