Tradition becomes a modern experience as China’s new generation learns about the legacy and customs behind their cultural heritage in Lost and Found.
Crafting a tender film for AirBnB, Mother Shanghai has identified the roots of many Chinese traditions and invited young adults to participate in keeping their culture alive. A young couple learns about the Dragon Dance, a comedian memorizes parts of the choral history of Dong, another young man tries his hand at crafting shumai, and an architect learns how to carefully carve lanterns. The reverence for these nearly-lost arts is apparent throughout the film, and the deep dive into Chinese culture is wonderfully eye-opening.
Mother Shanghai has created a narrative where connections to traditional practices seem fresh and wholly unique when seen from a newcomer’s perspective. The collective heart comes together at the end of Lost and Found, as all the different apprentices-in-training are shown singing, dancing, folding, and carving. The shared experience is a fantastic connection between past and present, joining generations.
