Directed by Athena Han through Marginal, this moving spot made for Canadian football club Coastal Football Club (CFC) showcases that sports and teamwork are a universal language, and can help people make connections no matter where they're from.
The spot opens with an Asian-Canadian teenage girl anxiously learning English in preparation for her first practice at the CFC. Through Han’s sensitive and cinematic storytelling, we feel the protagonist’s anxiety as she nervously revises English words on flashcards, her panic emphasised by a racing voiceover of her thoughts restlessly repeating football-related phrases.
At first, she seems nervous - with the other girls speaking a language she can’t understand, she feels isolated and apprehensive to join in. However, as soon as she scores a goal her fears melt away, and she confidently falls into the familiar flow of the game, championing how sports can break down language barriers, help people build confidence and make human connections.
