Netflix show Sex Education isn't shy when it comes to depicting intimate acts, but when it came to illustrating the extra-terrestrial inclinations of regular character Lily for the seventh episode of its third season, a more animated interpretation was needed.
Step forward director Yibi Hu and his animation team at Future Power Station in London to brilliantly bring to life the fantastical story of Lily and her love Ola in a short sequence that uses anime-inspired imagery to conjure distinctive representations of the on-screen couple.
“We’re all massive fans of the show," comments Hu, "so it was super exciting when the season three director Runyararo Mapfumo reached out about creating an X-rated opener set in Lily’s sci-fi universe.
“Given the content, it was really important to everyone that we make something as powerfully beautiful as it is sexy. We’ve given this piece so much love and hope the craft and care shine through from every grain.
“It was amazing to work with Runyararo, she’s such a fantastic collaborator, and with a constant exchange of ideas we could really get stuck into the finer details of the look, flow, and meaning of each scene, from character design to building an alien world.
“We’ve been waiting for this to drop for a while now, so can’t wait to see it air during episode 7 of the new series. Not sure if it’s one to show my mum though.”
