British Arrows Take A Bow

If you were anywhere near the center of Battersea Park in London yesterday evening, you might just have heard the cheers of the UK's adland glitterati as they gathered in the location's spectacular Evolution venue for the annual British Arrows Awards. In its 39th year, the Arrows continued the tradition of rewarding the best British commercial work with a quiver-full of mounted darts.


Hosting the event this year was young comedy star Jack Whitehall, whose bold assault on Saatchis' Paul Silburn won over most of the audience instantly (as did his refusal to utter the name Tom Kuntz). Whitehall was joined on stage by a stoic and professional Ben Priest from adam&eveDDB, the awards' Chairman, who took his endless ribbing with gentle good humour.

Whitehall looks on nervously when he realizes some ad-folk are bigger than him.

 
On to the prizes: The Chairman's Award, one of the most prestigious of the evening, was awarded to Rattling Stick's Ringan Ledwidge for his outstanding body of work. Sadly Mr Ledwidge couldn't attend due to shooting his feature film, but sent a humorous apology film in his stead. Other prominent winners were Audi – picking up Advertiser of Excellence, BBH – named Ad Agency Of The Year (for the second year running and seveth time in total), Blink – grabbing Production Company Of The Year and Tom Tagholm's stunning 'Meet The Superhumans' chosen as Commercial Of The Year.

In the main awards categories, the big winners of the night were the aforementioned 'Meet The Superhumans', John Lewis' 'The Journey' and 'The Other Half', The Guardian's 'Three Little Pigs', Hovis' 'Farmer's Lad' and the Lynx shower gel campaign 'Sporty/Brainey/etc Girl' all picking up more than one Gold award. Childline's powerful 'It Follows Me Around' and the Lauren Luke-starring 'Don't Cover Up' for Refuge also received multiple Golden nods from the judges.
