In our experience, films about soccer passion tend to hail from European/South American regions, with the US normally erring on the side of foot/base/basket-ball-based offerings.

Not so with this authentic and enjoyable execution for Venice Beach Football Club (VBFC), which, despite doffing the cap to its Italian influences (and partnership with bootmaker Pantofola D’Oro) through its narration, joyously focuses its attention on the local sportspeople that make the game great.

Directed by Superprime's Ben Quinn, ably assisted by his 14-year-old son Billy, who also plays for the club, Welcome To Venice is a mixed-media celebration of the grassroots organization formed by players, coaches, fans, artists, musicians, and proud Venice Beach locals whose mission is to build the game in their neighbourhood and create future local legends through their youth academy.

Created off the back of Quarantine Football: A Film By Billy and Ben, a short that detailed the struggles of not playing during the height of the Covid pandemic, the film was commissioned by the VBFC to help promote the collaboration between the club and Pantofola d’Oro, whose boots were worn by legends of the game during the 1970s.

“This film was made in the same homemade way Billy and I made our first one back in 2020,” explains Quinn. “It was all shot in Venice where we live, just the two of us, lugging our gear around in a little wagon. We even built a smoke machine using parts from Home Depot.

"The skaters are local skaters that all play in the famous Sunday VBFC pickup game. The guys with the low riders are the parents of Billy’s teammates.  We shot the Venice High School teams that are coached by VBFC.

"The cast is just a few of the beautiful diverse faces of Venice”
