As environmental protesters are attempting to point out, we are in the beginning of a mass extinction, with scientists estimating that between 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird and mammal become extinct every 24 hours.
Over the past 50 years, in North America alone almost a third of the total bird population – more than three billion individual birds – have been lost.
In a drive to help save endangered bird species, WWF and and audio streaming platform Yandex Music has launched a label of music created from samples of birdsong. The label kicks off with Wild, a chirpy rap from Ukrainian singer Ivan Dorn, accompanied by a fantastic animated promo, from BBDO Moscow and Petrick Animation Studio, comprising fabulous artwork in various styles – from anime to gouache – by 12 different illustrators.
The money received from listening to the tracks and selling accompanying merchandise goes to support WWF Russia's efforts to boost bird numbers and protect the habitat of threatened species. Up to 1 December, anyone can become a part of Birds Records by uploading their own tracks with bird samples to the label's site.
