Helmed by Fresh Film director Max Lowe, Faction’s inspiring short is titled Aikyam, which translates as 'Oneness' in Sanskrit, and profiles Vasu Sojitra, one of the world's leading adaptive freeskiers as he returns to India to explore his family heritage.
“After my leg was amputed, I just started enjoying things that were a little bit non-traditional,” says Sojitra over incredible footage of him skateboarding and skiing that testify to his optimistic, affirmative attitude.
Born in India, Sojitra moved to the US as a baby, but, at just nine months old had his right leg amputated after contracting septicemia. Sojitra’s family returned to Ahmadabad, Gujarat, India, for support but then moved back to Connecticut when he was seven years old. Sojitra first learned how to ski when he was 10 and has been bossing the slopes ever since.
The beautifully shot film sees him head back from the US to India, where he connects with a community of skiers and riders at the northern Kashmiri Province town of Gulmarg, the country’s sole ski resort.
