Oozing with magical surrealism, this mesmerising music video was created by London-based Studio Gruff, for musician and composer Alice Boyd’s debut single.
The song and its accompanying promo were inspired by Boyd’s artist residency at the Eden Project in Cornwall, where she spent a week in the Rainforest Biome recording plant conductivity data and ‘sonifying’ this into music. The sounds she created from the plant data formed the foundation of the EP, appearing as the opening electronic bed in Separation.
The exquisite, hand-drawn animation takes us on an epic trip through geological time, playfully depicting the evolution of bizarre, animal-plant hybrids, from the murky depths of sea to the expansion of life on land.
Separation brings the voices of plants to life, exploring our connection to the earth through a rich arrangement of vocals, electronics, and fantastical visuals.
