Full of detail and exceptionally crafted, Rejoice Resist uplifts Black expression, both within people and surrounding their bodies.

Lucille Clifton, an African-American poet, wrote that Black joy is an act of resistance. In a film like Rejoice, Resist, that quote is made clear and made complicated at the same time. A young girl, who seems to not want the kind of things her family is offering her, or the life her family hasm fights against them until she finally finds a way to be joyful herself. As she searches for her own joy, she finds symbolic relief in a field, dancing with her family.

A collaboration between multiple teams, IN THE BLK and Film Noir, this piece, directed by Elisha Smith-Leverock, shows off an eye for radical transformation in minor details. Production by Lief also incorporated work by Black fashion designers, showcasing a variety of designs in advance of the film’s release during Paris Fashion Week.
