Between Siri, Amazon's Alexa, and Sophia the robot, AI units are becoming more like humans than many of us are comfortable with. Following the path of this trend 100 years in the future, Mother imagines a world where robots are so life-like that they feel human emotion, and even attend therapy.
Part of TED's original film series, commissioned around its 2018 theme, The Age of Amazement, and produced by leading creative film makers from around the world, AI Therapy shows us a world in which a "second generation" of AI robots have solved all the world's problems from global warming to cancer. Their offspring, the "third generation", therefore has no problems to solve, so they spend their time DJing or creating their own lines of toe rings and eventually end up in therapy. With the marvellous Rebecca Front playing the therapist, the film imagines the increasing potential of AIs in a refreshingly humorous way.
The film premiered this weekend on the TED main conference stage in Vancouver.
