Some Novel Approaches to Creativity For World Book Day
Comic book concepts, Kafka-esque animated nightmares, stop-motion beauty and the Daddy of all book commercials; shots' World Book Day round-up covers all genres.
Today is World Book Day and as primary school-aged children up and down the lands dress up as the Gruffalo, Wally from Where's Wally, Paddington bear or are forced into pretending to be Winston Smith from George Orwell's 1984 by academically-minded, pushy parents, we at shots have compiled a list of our favourite commercials or short films from recent years that are for, or in some way about, books.
In places it's tenuous, we admit (book advertising has yet to really hit the creative heights it could), but with a fantastical film about Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, a brilliant stop-motion animation set in a bookshop, a trailer for a sort-of-ok adaptation of a bloody brilliant graphic novel and an art project that built a maze out of 250,000 books, we think there's enough here to excite any bookworm.
