US rap icon Jay-Z returns with this politically-charged new promo for the first non-Tidal exclusive track off his 13th studio album, 4:44.
Co-directed by the rapper and Mark Romanek, the video takes aim at the racist past of animation studios like Disney, Warner Bros. and other studios of the time, by mimicking their aesthetic.
Entitled The Story of O.J., the promo, which is shot in monochrome, acts as a commentary on the institutional racism in America today, and was supported by a mini documentary, Footnotes for The Story of O.J., (which can only be viewed on Tidal) which featured famous black stars like Michael Jordan, Chris Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Trevor Noah, and Will Smith discussing their views on racism in modern America.
In a time where race relations is at the forefront of the American media, this promo questions the benefits of fame and success for black men.
