Wendy Morgan, the director behind promos for the likes of BANKS & STEELZ, The Kills, C2C and Gnarles Barkley is the subject of this week's Playlist.

The Kills: Doing It To Death (dir. Wendy Morgan)

What’s the best promo you’ve seen recently and why?

My favorite promo at the moment is Alright by Kendrick Lamar because it is such a heavy yet beautiful song and the video has the same inspiring and emotionally intense qualities.

What’s the first promo you remember being impressed by?

At a very young age, I remember being mesmerized by The Police’s Message in a Bottle, partially because Sting was so handsome, and I really did love the song.

And what’s your all-time favorite music video?

I really don't have one favorite 'video of all time' although I think the most perfect music video ever made is probably Beat It by Michael Jackson and New Edition’s Cool It Now is a close second.

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspiration?

Since I studied art history I love looking for inspiration in things like Religious Art, some of my favorites are Bernini’s St. Theresa, El Greco’s Everything, and The Giotto Chapel. Some directors I look up to are Mark Romanek, Hype Williams, Werner Fassbinder, and Wes Anderson.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I’ve been listening to Your Dead by Flying Lotus pretty consistently since it came out, it’s a weird listen but I love it, super cinematic.  I’m also really into some of the songs Justin Bieber put out this year.

Sorry for that example, but they are such a great dance tracks, I love some of the videos they made too.

What’s your favorite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?

My husband bought me a cell phone charger which is also a compact mirror and it’s incredibly useful!

What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?

It is hard to choose just one artist but two who immediately come to mind are Kendrick Lamar and Beyonce because apart from being incredible artists, their messages are so strong and important in the world right now.

How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?

In recent years, I don't feel like it has changed that much. However, certain things have changed technology-wise and budget-wise, but it still feels the same to me.

Music videos have had a resurgence of late; where do you see the industry being in five years’ time?

I think VR videos will be more prevalent, and interactive videos will become more of the norm. Hopefully some even cooler technology will show up soon that will actually revitalize the medium, but I haven’t seen anything like that appear yet.
