Filmawi: A Few Of My Favourite Things
Knucklehead's new signing takes us through the visual, audio, and organisation apparatus that keeps his creativity on point.
Having worked with the likes of Stormzy, Post Malone, Dizzee Rascal, Chance the Rapper, Adidas, Dr. Martens, and more, director Filmawi has some serious pedigree coming into Knucklehead.
Known for emotionally resonant work that brings a unique blend of poetic realism and human intimacy to his projects, Filmawi's filmmaking and photography blend artful storytelling with a deep exploration of culture and human connection.
Here, he talks shots through the items that help that happen.
The Camera
This Contax T3 has been like my third eye around the world.
It’s helped me find my voice and keeps me humble and curious as I explore new cultures and meet people.
Right now, I’m working on a photography book featuring some of my favourite shots taken with it.
The Headphones
Since I bought these, every idea I’ve written has been with these headphones on, listening to Burial’s Tunes 2011–2019.
I could disappear for days.
If I could have invented anything that already exists, headphones would be high on the list.
Along with zips.
The Books
Before starting a new project, I always flip through some of my favourite art and photography books.
Artists like Roy DeCarava, Gregory Crewdson, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye really set the tone I want to go for.
It’s become an important part of my process.
The App
I was watching a lecture on YouTube and saw the speaker using the Obsidian App; it lets you link different notes, words, or paragraphs, creating a web of thoughts that sparks even more ideas.
I haven't bought a notebook since then.
I use it for all my notes and research, between my iPhone and MacBook.
The Blue Mary
I bought this royal blue, 1.5-foot Mary on a holiday in the South of France.
She stands on a shelf in my living room, and I often stop just to look at her.
She has this calming presence; there’s something captivating about her.
