To unveil its debut ad, the World Surf League has taken inspiration from some of the sport's greatest figures.
Capturing pro surfers Mick Fanning, Kelly Slater and Lakey Peterson in action, the minute-and-a-half long spot helmed by Dan DiFelice sees the sportstars-cum-daredevils prep, compete, fly through the air and create surfing magic from WSL championship event footage, filmed throughout 2015. There's even rumours that it contains snippets of Fanning's famed shark attack earlier this year.
Created by Mistress, the ad compares surfing to the chaos theory, commonly known as the Butterfly Effect - a mathematical explanation that studies how one small change (such as the fluttering of a butterfly's wings) can cause a large set of differences elsewhere.
By comparing this theory to surfing, the ad's voiceover celebrates the unpredictable yet equally awe-inspiring oceanic conditions, which lent themselves to the ad's tagline: 'You can't script this.' Utterly mind-blowing.
