With over 60 million people currently displaced, the ongoing refugee crisis has been a huge topic of conversation recently.

However, few creative initiatives have enlisted the public’s help and millennials, particularly, seem less involved.

To tackle this, SuperHeroes Amsterdam, together with Snaps and design portal The FWA has created an app to relate the crisis to youngsters.

The app – Refugee Emojis – is a charity initiative that launched today.

Designed to support the work of Médecins Sans Frontiéres (MSF – Doctors Without Borders), the app will also educate young people about the experiences faced by refugees daily.

With an emoji keyboard (below) that contains 36 emojis that represent the items needed by refugees, millennials can engage and learn about the situation.

Items include female sanitary products, candles and blankets – as well as an ear and a hug, to convey the humane side of the crisis.

MSF has provided refugees with a range of services, from emergency medical care, shelter and child birth assistance.

“We hope that the Refugee Emojis will also increase the awareness of the variety of hardships refugees face,” says MSF delegate director Katrien Coppens.

Downloads are available from either the Apple or Google store, priced at €1.99. All proceeds will go towards MSF.
