World’s First Cinema delivers Palm Reader
The Corner Shop's Luigi Calabrese directs Palm Reader from the band World’s First Cinema.
The Corner Shop premiere a new video for the song Palm Reader from the band World’s First Cinema.
Taking inspiration from the band's distinctive moniker and genre that is truly Cinematic, almost Theatrical, Rock-Pop; director Luigi Calabrese a fellow cinephile set the video in the heart of one of the birthplaces of cinema on the west coast, The Los Angeles Theatre.
The theatre opened its doors in 1931 with the premiere of Charlie Chaplins City of Lights and the building remains an iconic symbol of Los Angeles’ defining place in cinema history. Immersing the song in the theatre's rich history and opulence Palm Reader celebrates the band’s ability to weave music and movies into one beautiful tapestry that is as emotional as it is impactful, a true visual feast of sight and sound.

The band's ethos was centered around their love of cinema and fantasy. As a director, my main goal was to transform the environment into a character by showcasing the incredible artwork of the Los Angeles theater, making it a centerpiece of the visuals. I intended this project to serve as a love letter to cinema, drawing inspiration from Cinema Paradiso to set the tone for the piece.
The final step involved adding the fantasy element. Since the artwork played a role as a character, my aim was to integrate the band seamlessly into the environment and the history of the location. To achieve this effect, we used bendable mirrors in the finale, directing our camera towards them, creating a warping effect that intensified as the video progressed towards its end. This visual effect was meant to tangibly compliment the crescendo, symbolising the band's return to becoming an integral part of the cinema palace walls.
