Welcome to beyond with Mercedes-Maybach
In a co-production between Tempomedia and SMUGGLER, director Saad Moosajee takes the wheel for Mercedes-Maybach.
Employing a fusion of real-time virtual cameras and classic film techniques, director Saad Moosajee seamlessly blends the graphic and the cinematic, bringing an immersive world where vision becomes reality and heritage class meets the limitless possibilities of the future in Welcome to Beyond for Mercedes-Maybach.
Moosajee's bespoke and innovative visual style, borrowing from animation conventions and the classical surrealist paintings of Chirico, Ernst and Dali, imbues the spot with elegance and a feeling of heightened reality, reminiscent of a big screen event.
Using a volume stage, physical sets and innovative post production techniques, Moosajee brings to life a series of worlds that feel like sequential, hyper-crafted illustrations. His fluid and dream-like visual storytelling embraces the futuristic and surrealist design elements of the vehicles featured in the spot, including a full fleet of Maybachs with two concept cars, one by Virgil Abloh (MB Virgil Abloh) and the Maybach Vision 6 (used by Drake in his music videos). His sensory and abstract approach creates an immersive and visually stunning experience that highlights the unique qualities of each car.

"I was drawn to the brief’s unique combination of visual design and fantasy, the opportunity to create a film that played with time and space, that felt like a dream."
"Virtual Production is often used in film and commercial contexts as a way to replace the need for traveling to location. I wanted to explore its artistic potential, recontextualising it as a way to create new types of environments, fusing elaborate digital sets and sculptures with physical counterparts, and lighting techniques, syncing physical and virtual DPs, that could realize the world." said Saad Moosajee
When we first saw the brief we instantly knew it was something we wanted to be a part of. The combination of visionary creative with a talented director like Saad attached was always going to be a boundary pushing, unforgettable film. Using the virtual stage meant the film could travel between varied fantastical landscapes, perfect for the dream-like story being told. We really leaned into the creative potential of the stage, which gives the film that indecipherable combination of shot vs digital: the x-factor of VFX. adds Matthew Shannon, Executive Producer, Analog.
