A new campaign for Virgin Red, Virgin's new rewards club, takes to the sky in a 40-second spot.
Set to the famous 1983 track 99 Red Balloons by Nena, the spot sees a young girl blow a bubble worthy of Willy Wonka before lifting off and taking flight across the city.
The spot was created by Truant London and directed by Blink director Tash Tung, and is Tung's first commercial project after directing a series of music videos. "It's been such a great project to start with commercially, especially the idea of escapism when the script came through in lockdown," said Tung. "Blink were really supportive throughout and my approach was very much the same as my music videos, but I loved the scale of this film (versus my previous work) and how the commercial process allows you to be incredibly thorough and thoughtful.
"We used a practical bubble as well as VFX, and making those took a lot of development. The biggest challenges and my steepest learning curve were the VFX elements as I hadn't done anything like it at all; thinking about integration, animation and the parameters of believability in a make-believe world."
