Verve Media’s Jorrit Stollman shoots single take spot for Shaklee
Remotely shot, daily video calls and virtual meetings helped streamline the process.
When DDB San Francisco approached Verve Media to pitch on a great concept for Shaklee, it was a perfect match for Dutch director Jorrit Stollman.
Upon early talks about creative ideas and concept behind the fantastic spot, it was decided to produce the entire spot fully remote in Holland with all meetings and the shoot done virtually through remote camera feeds.
The concept behind the spot was to build a machine, that visualizes a symbiosis between nature and science. Set in motion by a single drop of water, a chain reaction of physical interactions un- folds, triggering the ongoing narrative while revealing multiple Shaklee products.
Naturally the pre-production and planning behind such unusual concept is most essential and will mold the idea into reality. Daily video calls and virtual meetings helped streamline the process and got agency and client to sign off on the final machine design and the building of the machine could begin. Since the interactions involved chemical reactions, as well as water, wind and other elements, this was no easy undertaking.

During pre-production the team behind the machine was able to do tests on certain elements and parts of the chain reaction, but the time constraints never allowed for a full run through pro to the shoot. Verve Digital provided a full animatic of the machine in order to test timings and see what areas could cause trouble during the life action shoot.
After all this preparation it came as no surprise that it actually took 21 takes to get all elements from the machine to work together and bring the chain reaction to life. All elements in the final spot are filmed entirely in live action and without any CGI work.
The final result shows a flawless symbiosis between science and nature - combining both elements into one continuous evolving mechanism.
