Based on a rough idea and previsualisation for a visual spot representing the new gaming and NFT space in Web3, Verve Media’s team jumped into gear in order to deliver a full-fledged CGI spot including sound and music within the gruelling time line of just six weeks. After a quick award and contract the team under the creative direction of Martin Weisz went underway starting with look development as well as character designs.

In parallel 3D assets were sourced and modelling for some character and city assets began. Within the first week the look was established and the main city assets were assembled for some early test renders.

Because of the short turnaround it was incredible helpful to have a direct communication set up between the decision making team at MetaWin and Weisz, so decisions and changes could be approved within the same day.

After doing some early test renders with the new city backdrop it became clear that the character design would have to be different than originally planned, so Weisz and the team changed direction and developed a whole new character design from scratch. Like so often the character design turned out to be one of the most labour intensive tasks of the whole project. “At the end of the day curve balls are always what makes our job so challenging and fun,” laughs Weisz.

Luckily animation was able to continue with the ‘stand in’ character until the final character was finished modelling and texturing. During this time the team was working around the clock in order to finish the assets and backgrounds for all shots of the spot. Once the character was finished, it was just a matter of swapping that asset and then render out the final shots one by one.

During the hectic schedule, Verve Media’s audio partner, California Music, was working to find the right music and sounds for the spot. The sound design was of extreme importance for an action driven spot as this one – so California Music started roughing in a full sound design vision based on the previsualisation and then started to find the right music to supplement and support the sounds as well as the storyline and action beats.

The whole process was a fluid update between visuals and new shots as well as new audio and music versions, fine tuning as a team and making changes and revisions throughout the whole timeframe. When the character design was finished and approved, pretty much all other assets and music were approved as well and it was time to render the final picture.

With some slight texture and lighting adjustments, the final renders were done within four days and handed off to editorial and compositing. All these final tasks were handled in-house, which was the only way to turn the project around in the final week.

The end result is a fast-paced fun spot, that goes behind the scenes of a web3 gaming and NFT experience unlike anything seen before.
