Director Vanessa Stachel, now represented exclusively for the German market by Simon & Paul, has released this entrancing and exquisitely crafted branded short film, titled The Nymph, for environmental activist group, Greenpeace.
Produced as one of two graduation projects during her directing studies at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, the mythical story explores love, greed and the destruction of nature through the ill-fated relationship of a wounded knight and water nymph, Ilo, whose magic has the power to heal but at the cost of the surrounding nature dying.
The story is realised through a captivating, theatre-like set and intricate costumes, and live-action footage and practical effects are interwoven with beautifully hand-painted, pop-up storybook scenes.
Statchel adds: “I wanted to make a film about environmental protection, but with the focus on emotion and storytelling rather than lecturing people. For many, nature is a backdrop. In this film it is the lead character."
