2020 was a banger for Atlanta-Brooklyn hip-hop duo Run the Jewels. Ju$t, Out of Sight, and Ooh LA LA gave us in-your-face socially engaged musical films, and RtJ isn’t done yet.
Walking in the Snow is another music video from the 2020 album RTJ4 that pushes the boundaries of hip hop relevance. Starring Killer Mike and El-P as new toys on the block, the two quickly get caught up in under-the-bed anarchy as the dolls take to the streets to protest. They’re sublimated into an underground resistance group of toys in the vent system, and help find a way to overthrow the powers that be.
The film is fun throughout but doesn’t ever lose sight of the message. Killer Mike delivers lines just as fast as director Chris Hopewell can introduce new characters, sympathies, and antagonists. The result is a fully fleshed out, Toy Story-meets-Robot Chicken world that is a fantastic chapter in the RTJ4 filmography. Walking in the Snow was produced by Black Dog Films.
