When writing a list of potential commercial directors, it is unlikely that the helmer of horrifying fare like Audition, Ichi the Killer, and Visitor Q would be at the top of potentials.

Thankfully, TBWA\Media Arts Lab Tokyo has no such qualms when drafting in auteurs for Apple's Shot on iPhone series, enlisting the talents of Takashi Miike to produce a live-action reimagining of 'Godfather of Manga' Osamu Tezuka's 1986 epic Midnight.

Obstensively designed to showcase the cinematic capabilities of iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max in low-light situations, Miike, through production company OLM, Inc., takes the opportunity to fill the screen with vibrant neon and heavy action beats; interspersing the mayhem only possible due to the adaptability of the cameras capturing it with the Manga panels that influenced them.

“Mr. Tezuka is something of a god among manga artists," explains Miike, "so it was an honour to take on the challenge of expressing his work using only iPhone.

"As we were shooting, I naturally began to challenge myself to think about how we could make a work unique to iPhone, beyond the usual approach to a film.

"I truly felt that the iPhone has the power to do things that a conventional movie camera can’t.”
