Director Taichi Kimura (repped by Caviar) is behind this experimental art film which combines black and white footage with a bespoke poem written by poet Shuya Masuda.

Shot in Tokyo, Mu - literally meaning nothing, zero, void - features visuals inspired by photographer Daido Moriyama and a textured performance interlude by Japanese rapper Jin Dogg. The film is the  "physical manifestation" of imaginary characters Kimura had written in his previous film Lost Youth and Neon, a feature currently in development.

Watching the nihilistic film is a bit like being a voyeur in Kimura's head: the abstract ideas he emits through his work posit that it's okay to be depressed or moody, and that this state of flux is necessary, even.

Mu, in itself, is an amalgamation of stark, mystical and at some points, sinister, images which portray a sense of sadness born from the murders, terrorist attacks and natural disasters in Japan during the 90’s and early 00’s. More of an art piece than a narrative short film, Kimura leaves the film’s meaning up to the audience to decipher.
