Taking the genteel seafront of Leigh-on-Sea and giving it a bombastic visual edge, BWTV's new film for Stepney Workers Club (SWC) is a charmingly silly musing on the increasingly blurred line between experiencing life and merely watching it.
The first instalment of a proposed quarterly film series exploring the club's longstanding motto - Freedom of Sport, Freedom of Thought - The Swimmer plays with the concepts of physical exertion and mental escape through its poetic voiceover and surreal imagery, only for the rug to be pulled from under us by a digital revelation in its final moments.
Combining traditional filmmaking with a cheeky dose of "AI fidgeting" (i.e. thunderstorms and whales), this intriguing piece is an artful start to a compelling creative venture.
