Simple tech helps to connect in Spark's tear-jerking spot

Wedding speeches make us weepy at the best of times, so it's no wonder the simple tech-y twist in this lovely film for NZ telco Spark had us reaching for the tissues.

Created by Colenso BBDO and helmed by Christopher Riggert at Finch, the ad opens on a wedding reception, where the bride hands the floor to her father, who is out of shot. During his speech, it's revealed how, in the months leading up to a wedding, he ended up in hospital - and the emotional toll it took on the family.

As he goes on to talk about the connection and optimism he shares with his daughter, guests wipe away tears. But the real clincher comes when it's revealed that all along, he's been making the speech from his hospital bed, via a mobile phone screen.
