When John Madden died at the end of 2021 the sport of American football lost an icon.

A Super Bowl-winning coach, a legendary commentator and, for many - especially those outside the US - the face of American football via the NFL video game that bore his name from 1988 onwards.

This eight-minute documentary commissioned by the publisher of that game and directed by The Malloys through Superprime, celebrates Madden's life, work and impact on the sport, with interviews with former players, co-commentators and stock footage of Madden himself.

"As a coach, as a broadcaster, and in our game - Coach Madden is football for tens of millions of fans," wrote Electronic Arts CEO, Andrew Wilson, in an announcement to his employees. "He had an incredible record as a head coach, including a victory in Super Bowl XI. He transitioned to broadcasting, where his 30+ years across multiple networks showed he was clearly the most innovative, relatable and entertaining voice in football. Along the way, we launched a video game franchise that has defined decades of sports games, taught generations how to play the game, and built millions of friendships and connections. Through his life in the sport, Coach Madden became an icon."
