Playlist: Arnaud Bresson
We hear from MJZ director Arnaud Bresson, where he talks terrible tattoos, the relevance of music videos and working with pop artists.
What’s the best music video you’ve seen recently and why?
The Blaze - MADLY. It’s real poetry, this music video looks like a sequence from a feature film. When watching it you almost forget it’s a music video. The track blends with the images in an unusual way and it fits perfectly.
They didn’t just use the Spotify version of the track, they took it to another level. I found this sequence from a working class British kid’s memory documenting a tale of his first love in a rave brilliant.

What’s the first music video you remember being impressed by?
Bjork - It’s Oh So Quiet. Director Spike Jonze, a fellow MJZ director created a real musical and it’s fantastic.

It's hard to choose one in particular but right now you could say that my favourite music video would be Eels - Novocaine For The Soul.

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspiration?
My inspiration does not come from other directors’ work or an artist in particular.
For each project I dive into a new territory so my research is always very different from the last.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Travis Scott’s latest album, it gives me a lot of energy, it’s probably one of the best albums of the year.

What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?
My Air Pod Max headphones.
What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?
I would love to work with more pop artists, confronting myself with a different universe outside of hip hop. I would love to work with Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Harry Styles or even Justice.

Where do you see the music video industry being in five years’ time?
I think we will go back to the era of when music videos were really something, crafted with a bit more money and time.
Some of them looked and felt like feature films, they were relevant and raised people’s spirits.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…
I have lots of tattoos and they’re not all good haha
