Peer Review: Agos Bruera
Mexico City-based REVERSE director and multimedia artist, Agos Bruera, has lent her vibrant filmmaking to global brands from Bumble and TRESemmé to Nestlé. Here, she talks about her journey into directing, and explains why creatives should set techy trends aside to focus on true storytelling.
Who are three contemporaries that you admire?
Andy Reisinger: 3D artist and graphic designer. From furniture to AI art, his way of conceptualising beauty is delicate and astonishing.
Telfar Clemens: Amazing work. He managed to re-conceptualise a niche style and he makes a creative and political statement with every piece, making fashion not only cool but reachable for everyone.
Abandon ego. Have a clear point of view. Communicate. Learn to be a true team player.
Pilar Zeta: Her sculptures and digital art have the power to transport you to another galaxy and time instantly. Female Argentinian power at its finest!
*Lastly, honourable mention to my main inspiration for work and life right now, [Argentine footballer] Lionel Messi.

Please share 3-4 pieces of work that exemplify great direction
Sony Bravia Balls, directed by Nicolai Fuglsig and created by Fallon and Art Director/Copywriter Juan Cabral. It’s simple, sensitive, and unpretentious. WONDERFUL!
Flora by Gucci, directed by Chris Cunningham. It’s poetic and dark..because why not?
Guinness Surfer, directed by Jonathan Glazer. Cinematic and symbolic. Just perfect!

What do you like most about the work that you do?
Adapting. Getting to know new people all the time. Collaborating.
What serves you today, goes in the trash tomorrow...set these trends aside and focus again on narrative, real and true storytelling.
What was your journey to becoming a director?
I started many years ago as a trainee/intern for the direction department (AD). As a side job, I started freelancing as a creative assistant for many directors worldwide until I decided to start directing by myself for small local brands in Argentina and Peru. Then, it’s all history.

What is one thing all directors need?
Abandon ego. Have a clear point of view. Communicate. Learn to be a true team player.
I've learned more from the NOs than from the YESes, as cliché as that might sound. Setbacks can be a blessing.
Who was the greatest director of all time?
I cannot choose one: from Francis Ford Coppola to Pedro Almodóvar to Lucrecia Martel to Xavier Dolan to Michel Gondry. My latest favourite movie is Aftersun by director Charlotte Wells.
Above: A clip from Aftersun (2022), Bruera's latest favourite movie, directed by Charlotte Wells.
Did you have a mentor?
Luckily, yes. Many directors whom I've collaborated with were my mentors. I've learned more from the NOs than from the YESes, as cliché as that might sound. Setbacks can be a blessing.
What’s changing in the industry that all directors need to keep up with?
AI, TikTok, all of them. It's constantly changing, evolving. I think it’s fun but also it consumes a lot of time and energy. What serves you today, goes in the trash tomorrow. From my perspective, as we reflect on sustainability, it can be quite interesting to set these trends aside and focus again on narrative, real and true storytelling.
