On My Radar: Favio Vinson
Papaya Films director Favio Vinson reveals what's on his creative radar as he gets serious about a Steven Soderbergh classic, has a lot of time for David Lynch, and loves movies... as long as he can keep his eyes open.
What’s the most creative advertising idea you’ve seen recently?
Polaroid’s latest campaign - a reminder that real life moments will always outlast virtual reality (at least for me).
What website(s) do you use most regularly?
YouTube; the largest content library on the planet.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought?
Some old CCTV cameras, and a cathodic tube television to recreate an old TV aesthetic look for a fashion film we shot last week. It is interesting how obsolete technology gets revived through time for creative purposes.
What product could you not live without?
Pen and paper. It isn’t a very original answer, but I do write many things down. I also have to draw these ideas out as they come in my mind.
What’s the best film you’ve seen over the last year?
Marty Supreme. The Safdie Brothers really managed to create a narrative and visual style that resonates. It is also very inspiring to see how they got their breakthrough, how their cinema, now recognised worldwide, got crafted initially through making short films relentlessly, and through very restricted conditions.
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
I re-watched Steven Soderbergh’s Sex, Lies and Videotape last week. It’s great proof that a simple idea articulated in simple terms can yield a film with tremendous depth. Also, re-reading the film’s original screenplay shows you how something that may read corny at first can actually be delivered in a very powerful way through strong acting performances. That film is a good reminder that keeping things simple, trusting your vision and moving forward is often the best way to go.
What’s your preferred social media platform?
Instagram, for all purposes. This is actually the only one I use.
What’s your favourite TV show?
The Sopranos, with Succession not too far in the rear view mirror.
What’s your favourite podcast?
I don’t listen to many podcasts to be honest, I do however watch a lot of film making ofs. They are very insightful.
What have you been most inspired by recently?
David Lynch’s book, Catching The Big Fish. It's probably the simplest, most uplifting guide to creativity. I recommend it to anyone who feels stuck.
If you could only listen to one music artist from now on, who would it be?
Moby. I’m from the 90s.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
Start keeping track of CO2 emissions in an effort to reduce pollution made by the entire industry. There is plenty of money to go round to make this possible.
Who or what has most influenced your career?
Jean Paul Goude’s retrospective my father took me to in 2011.
Jonathan Glazer’s Guinness Surfer ad.
Tony Scott’s Man On Fire
David Lynch’s biography.

What scares you the most?
Seeing the bottom of the ocean slowly disappear under me as I’m swimming. That, and accounting.
What makes you happiest?
My sister’s laugh. It always hits the spot.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people wouldn’t know.
I tend to fall asleep when I watch a movie, even the ones I love. It’s a curse…
