When Booksmart came out last year, the world suddenly realised that actress Olivia Wilde was a serious talent behind the camera.
Yet to bring out a feature-length follow-up to that comedy hit (though her psychological thriller for the Time’s Up era, Don’t Worry Darling, is in progress), we instead can make do with this lovely slice of branded entertainment for tech brand HP.
Following a hospitalised woman as she struggles to remember the events that brought her there, Wake Up swiftly transitions into a poetic study of freedom, both in a literal and digital sense.
Again showcasing the skills that made Booksmart such a treat, Wilde, signed to anonymous content for commercial and branded content representation last summer, creates a thoughtful and energetic short, complemented by Oscar nominated DOP Matthew Libatique's perfect capture of New York landmarks and the sparkling soundtrack from indie pop darling Perfume Genius.
