New York Times Advertising (NYTA) has launched this fascinating print campaign, titled 175 Years of Advertising, which draws from the newspaper’s archives to explore how advertising reflects moments that shaped the world.

The campaign features a monochrome, nine-page print spread, which moves chronologically through real New York Times adverts, with each selected ad highlighting or foreshadowing a distinct moment in culture from the moon landing to the banning of smoking.

“Reviewing our expansive archive revealed a clear pattern: advertising often foreshadows significant cultural moments, from scaling the adoption of personal automobiles to the emergence of online banking,” said Tusar Barik, SVP of Marketing at New York Times Advertising.

“This insight shaped our campaign, which is grounded in The Times’s history and the evolution of advertising, while also acknowledging our long-standing client relationships and advertising’s role in supporting independent journalism.”
