Directed by Malik Sayeed and conceived by agency 72andSunny, this touching short film for the NFL honors the sacrifice of a family who dedicated their lives to fighting for justice.
After Anquan Boldin’s cousin, Corey Jones, was killed by a plainclothes police officer, Boldin became more politically active, retiring shortly after to help found the Players Coalition. This charity arm of the NFL supports social justice causes across the nation. The ad, which aired on Sunday during the American Football Conference Championship, showed Boldin announcing his retirement, explaining that what happened to Jones will not be in vain. He ends the ad stating “Some things are more important than football.”
Cut with footage of press during the day after Jones’ death and a reenactment of the night of the tragedy, Inspire Change is overtly political and without gloss. It’s effective because it feels like a response to the current climate in the USA as well as showing the way forward through positive, focused change.
