Imagine a party full of art school kids that cover every subculture of experimental fashion, set in a run down building and you’ve made it.

The plot of the video follows Rina Sawayama as she navigates her way through the dimly lit halls of the party before her alter ego ‘the monster’ locks ‘shy’ Sawayama in the bathroom’. Jak Payne took the original idea of Frankenstein, different bodies making one character, and interpreted it in a more psychological way.

The video is infused with references from skins and euphoria, and tastefully inspired by influential 90s photographers such as Davide Sorrenti and Juergen Teller. Payne has an aptitude for researching and drawing from perfectly fitting references in all of his projects. This is reflected in the strong narratives and quality of all of his work. Recently Payne has directed music videos for artists including Prospa, Puma Blue and VTSS.

Jak Payne on Frankenstein: “it was great getting the chance to work with Rina and her team on this film. Rina had a strong image of this video being set at a house party, but we wanted to find a way of making it a bit weirder, so we landed on this idea of shooting this split personality narrative. Rina turns up at the party and she’s nervous and kind of overwhelmed, but then is trapped by this alternate self that appears out of a bathroom mirror and then proceeds to take over the party."

"I liked the idea of playing off the track name Frankenstein, but taking a bit of a psychological twist on that, showing that people have multiple selves stitched together to make a whole. We were also really lucky how many of our amazing cast came forward from Rina’s fans to take part in this. Best open casting ever... It made it a really fun day on set.”
