Comparing the future to a massive wave, the full weight of the ocean bears down on surfers as they struggle to keep their heads above water.
Taking us on a powerful moment of nature-meeting-fearlessness, Greenpeace drives the metaphor home with exquisitely shot nature photography and underwater scenes of swimmers and surfers trapped in an undertow. It’s terrifying, scary, and the image of a single hand, reaching back as a body is pummeled by a massive wave. The hopefulness at the end, shown when a small boy gets up on a board and rides a massive wave, is cathartic, a moment of light in a nightmarish alternate future.
With strategic agency Dawn, Greenpeace demonstrates emotional breadth and the importance of strong, indirect imagery. Make Future was directed by Paul Geusebroek and produced by HALAL Amsterdam.
