A comedy film may seem like an strange way to advertise an album, but this deadpan short, directed by Vasek Sladek through Creative Embassy, perfectly captures the music lover’s thrill of settling in with a long-awaited new record.
Launched to promote Czech country band Frankie & The Deadbeats' newly released album Sometimes Drunk, Always Fucked Up, the humorous film, titled You Are All Mine for the Night, opens with a man at home, unwrapping his new record ritualistically as he prepares for an uninterrupted listening session. But his plans are soon disturbed by a knock at the door.
A girl is excited to surprise him with an unexpected opportunity to spend the night together – but all he can think about is his record. In a hilariously uncomfortable exchange, he turns her away, telling her to come back later. She storms off, leaving the film to evolve into a comedic exploration of solitude and sacrifice: how much is a music lover willing to give up for the perfect listening experience?
Director Sladek said: “I remembered an interview with Henry Rollins about how important it is for people who love music to sit down and listen to a record. They look forward to it, plan for it, and want to enjoy it undisturbed. We all have our own small rituals that mean the world to us while listening, and the people around us often don’t understand them. Bingo.
“Together with Tomáš Novotný, we translated that insight into a romantic relationship, where we put the characters in front of a question: what are they willing to sacrifice to be alone from time to time without ending up lonely?”
