Five Questions from Quarantine: Julio Miguel
From Whisky, Director and CMO Julio Miguel shares his advice for surviving isolation and who he would choose to bring into quarantine for a mix of artistic and culinary distractions.
What's your self-isolation set-up at the moment?
Right now my set-up is much more adequate, but at the beginning it wasn't easy. Even though I had a desk, I didn't use it, it was more like storage or shelf, where I accumulated things. Since I usually work a lot from home, I had gotten used to working it from the couch or from the bed (bad idea!). In the second week of isolation I started to have backaches, so I was forced to look for a chair in the office, clean the desk and start working from there. Everything got better. We are now in the fourth week of quarantine, and for me everything has become more methodical.
It's lockdown; aside from your family, which four people, past or present, would you most like to be quarantined with?
In fact, I am living this quarantine alone, or rather, with my dog, so that is a question I ask myself every day and the answer varies according to my mood and the interests of the moment, which are also changing. However, I think that my most sincere answer would cover the interests that I like the most, as a diver and photographer I would choose Paul Nicklen, as a director my choice would undoubtedly be Jon Favreau, as a cook Anthony Bourdain and finally as a music lover, my Latin side pulls me too much, probably Willie Colón (composer and salsa singer), and let see what happens.
We need entertainment, what's your favorite short film?
I like a French short film shot in Tunisia called Nefta Football Club, then call me corny, but I really like Lava by Pixar.

powered byYou've completed Netflix. And Amazon Prime. And Disney+. It's on the hard stuff; board games. What do you pick and why?
Risk, basically because I can play it alone and not fall into the madness of playing a multi-person board game, trying to fight against several other personalities!
On a serious note, how do you think this situation will impact you individually, and the industry as a whole?
I believe that in the marketing aspect, brands will understand the need for empathy and closeness beyond selling a product. I think that this will happen by association or as a result of the pandemic. I am convinced that the industry will become much more local, strengthening the industry of each country, simply because people are getting used to their home office and understand that there really is no need to travel for every shoot, edit, or production. I also think that for a while after this people will refuse to travel far away from home. As individuals, I think we need to develop our knowledge; every day we will be required to know and handle many things, to be aware of many different formats, platforms, and languages. Everything is going to change, but I am convinced that it is for the better.
