Produced to accompany the Children’s Commissioner for England's report on what makes children feel unsafe when out in public, Shona Hamilton's SAFE is a timely eye-opener for those of us comfortably out of school-age.
Working with the real stories of the young people cast for the film, which echoed the findings of the report, the piece highlights the fact that far from the perpetrators of crime and anti-social behaviour often presented in the media, today's teens do not feel safe and confident to play outdoors or enjoy public spaces independently.
Whilst making for uncomfortable viewing, the fact that the cast narrate their own stories gives a real sense of authenticity to Hamilton's piece, which combines an artful shooting style with overlooked voices to create a compelling call-to-action.
