Compulsory launch curatorial space compulsory.gallery
compulsory.gallery launches with support by Kodak & Cheat.
London based production company Compulsory are launching an online curatorial space to celebrate creative work from the worlds of film, art, photography and music video.
compulsory.gallery will be a free to view space curated online by a hefty list of influential talents that aims to keep audiences connected through creativity whilst most of the world stays at home.
Developed as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, each day will see a guest curator champion work they find most inspiring, contemporary or classical but always personal to them. The schedule will also be supported by the Compulsory team, for whom breaking up-and-coming talent is always at the forefront. By the nature of having a constantly changing set of programmers, the curation will have an exciting and unexpected tone, shifting through genres, formats, mediums and styles but retaining Compulsory’s values of bringing art and entertainment to new audiences.
The space will be opened by the artist Cakes Da Killa on Thursday 16th April running through the isolation period and beyond. Across the first fortnight, guest curators include Philip Ilson, Creative Director of the London Short Film Festival, artists Jay Prince, My Panda Shall Fly, Bradley Zero of Rhythm Section, Director Aoife McArdle, Vimeo’s Head of Curation Jeffery Bowers and more.
The launch of this incentive is supported by Kodak and CHEAT who are the sponsors for the gallery’s first month. As key suppliers to the creative industries, both brands have helped to inspire an ambition to maintain exceptional levels of craft across many types of filmmaking.
Founding Partner Chris Toumazou said about the launch of compulsory.gallery: “It is important that people feel connected and entertained, particularly with all the uncertainty that is happening around us. I want compulsory.gallery to be our safe space, a way that people can check in and fuel their creativity during this period of isolation but also beyond. We will be working with our partners and talented network to get work seen, promoting unsung voices and to challenge creativity at the core by inspiring others.
I’m excited to see this as a time for us to unite more closely with organisations and individuals and there hasn’t been a better time to band together. In particular our launch sponsors Kodak, who have been an avid supporter of Compulsory allowing the talent we represent to keep shooting on film and Cheat who started their journey at a similar time to us and have an incredible passion for and commitment in working as a leading post production house.”
Director of Post Production company Cheat, Toby Tomkins said this about the project:
“I am delighted to announce our sponsorship of compulsory.gallery as a project which aligns perfectly with what Cheat represents; bringing creative work that is inspiring, bold and original to the forefront - no matter the format or source. We are really excited to be part of something the industry needs right now, and I can’t wait to see what the amazing curators choose this month”
Sam Clark, Senior Sales Director at Kodak shared the following statement: “I’m extremely excited to be sponsoring compulsory.gallery especially as a creative response through these times. It's a perfect way to celebrate and showcase the type of support Kodak encourages as we help to contribute to our incredible filmmaking community and industry. We are proud to see how film plays an important role in giving filmmakers and creatives freedom and options to tell their stories and we're here to stand by them.”
